didnt beat it in boiling springs and that scares me because now its not gonna stick as easy with the wetness. accumalations might be easier to get if it would change over now...which is kind of a "duh" statement but im sure skip knows what i mean.... but right now its 37 and light rain :(
Precip is falling pretty solid here in mid-to-upper Cleveland County (Near the intersection of 18 & 180). Temp is hovering just above 40 at the moment.
Answer to Jeff and Iceman is the same -- cold from racing from northwest to southeast.
Looks like the really cold air is on a line from Gainesville Ga. across far NW S.C. to Cashiers to Hendersonville then following the base of the mountains.
OK..me again in western cleveland. I finally quit slacking off and got a google ID.
I keep watching the thermometer here. It's one of those digital ones with a remote sensor/transmitter outdoors. Autorefreshes about every 30 seconds. It is standing firm at 41. But it sure FEELS colder outside to me. No precip falling. But we are on the edge of our seats wanting it!
skip i have a question... if the radar is showing RED would that be because thats snow and its reflecting back to the radar so it looks heavier than it is?? reason i ask is the wbtv radar is showing red like around spartanburg
skip i have a question... if the radar is showing RED would that be because thats snow and its reflecting back to the radar so it looks heavier than it is?? reason i ask is the wbtv radar is showing red like around spartanburg
it's 37 right by the old kemet plant with light, steady rain. My little brothers and I are waiting and watching for the snow!! i'm 11 and i've been interested in weather since i was 5! i'm still trying to talk my dad into install weatherbug on my cell phone!!! -*~*DeSsIe*~*
The Accuweather radar kind of reflects what some here have been saying. You can see on there darker bands of precip where folks on here were reporting stuff falling, like upper Cleveland. The heavy (green & yellow)blob around Greenville is racing this way and looks to be intensifying a bit.
Just an amateur observation. LOL
I think I'm going to head out for a bit and see what happens. Looking forward to seeing everyone's updates when I get back. Come on SNOW!
When the '93 storm came in it was late in the evening and it had been raining for a while, I mean there were puddles in places. I was working at a grocery store and someone asked me if it was going to snow and I looked at them as if they were crazy, plainly it was raining so how could snow start covering the ground. I had been in the stockroom or away from the front for 30 -45 minutes and someone called me to the front, when I got there they asked me again do you think it will snow, and this got me a little irritated and I said, "no it's raining". They tell me to look again and when I turn around the parking lot is covered in white. I was amazed. Don't give up yet!!!
clicked over to www.wunderground.com and typed in some random cities in NE Ga and on the SC/GA border, still too warm there, and their observations update every few mintues or so and are more specific to a local area (they have ones in Cliffside, Blacksburg, etc. around here)
y'all can stay on the hope program if you want, but we aren't getting squat for snow, if anything.
No I don't think we are getting squat for snow, but I hope to soon eat alot of crow!
Heh, poet and didn't know it!
I did check weather underground again and the temp in Chestnut Ridge in Kings Mountain just dropped to 38.4 degrees two minutes ago....so maybe there is hope.
Starting to get discouraged -- cold air having a hard time making over the mountains -- still around 40 all the way back to GSP to the southwest -- cold has made it to Hendersonville and is clearly seeping into our area -- but I expected Rutherfordton to be much colder than it is right now.
We better see some dramatic changes in the next 2 hours or it may not happen.
Skip, When do you expect it to change over to snow? I have been tracking this storm just as I was the last storm. Cliffside is at 41 and the rain has gotten pretty steady.
SKIP!!!!!!!!Oh my gosh...I just realized that I am addicted to this blog! I've seriously been checking it every five minutes, and can't stop thinking about precip, moisture, snow, radars, cold air, warm air, temperatures, rain, etc, etc...
Now, I'm going to tell you why I said yesterday it wouldn't be a big a big snow storm and why I thought temps would be a problem.
1) If the cold air isn't in place when the moisture gets here, historically, for us, it is rare to get a good snow from this scenario. But for the true snow buffs you will recall 1985 when it was thundering, lightning and raining very hard at 10pm and by 6am the next morning a major push of cold had come in and changed the liquid to snow. We got somewhere around 4 or 5".
2) Some of you will say I am absolutely foolish. Pay attention to the wildlife if you are in an area where it can be seen. Squirrels, espcially, tend to work a little harder when a big storm is coming. My great grandfather told me this when I was little and has been correct every time we've gotten a big snow( 8"+ ). I'm serious, animal( wild ones ) patterns change when a big event is coming.
I've kept records of snowfall since 1980( I was 14 ) because I finally got tired of the weatherman being wrong when I would stay up all night to see the snow and then would have to go to school with no sleep.
snowman .... if no chance of dusting .... looks like your forecast of 1 inch is a big miss ... skip we appreciate your humility and thoroughness ...snowman, why don't you start your own blog oh...it's cause nobody cares
ok everyone!! whoever lives on Montrose Drive you are not hallucinating!!!! over here by the old kemet plant there are small flurries as well!!! the thermometer says that it's 36 but i just stepped outside and it feels about 26. but that may be because i have on a tee shirt and sweats. our thermometer is very old so it may not be accurate. my dad says it is about 30 but i still think it's colder! *~*DeSsIe*~*
Just checked weather.com for Cliffside. Says that around 3 we should start seeing snow all the way through 8 and then snow showers through 11. Hope their right. It has dropped from 43 to 40 here.
Thanks for making me feel less crazy DeSsIe! :-) Maybe my eyes weren't playing tricks on me!
And Snowman, for the record, the squirrels in my yard were busier than usual this morning scurrying around and foraging for food! They were considerably more active...

Maybe, but I am the ONLY one who said early on yesterday morning the temps would be a problem. In fact, I was told the temps would be plenty cold. Looks as if I were right. It doesn't take much to make adusting.
ICEMAN said... Thats right snowman no one likes you

That would probably be because I am right so much. Just to make another person not like me. The Blizzard of 1993 did not start late in the evening as posted above. It started shortly after noon.
BTW, other than Skip, I saw none of you make any type of call.
I understand now why so many of you run to the grocery store at the sight of a snowflake on the TV screen. Thats Ok though, you put money in my pocket by doing so.
She's right about the squirrels. They have been busy. Just saw some scurrying around my yard pickin up acorns. I don't usually see them active this late in the day. It's normally early am they are out eating. keep your fingers crossed.
Interestingly, the cold air is closing in on us on three sides -- from the north (around the mountains that way) from over the mountains to the northwest and from around the mountains the other way to our southwest.

Thats just normal activity. They usually start a day or so before a storm in order to prepare.
Anonymous said... And just how would you know if we get snow from 3 - 9 PM???
1:21 PM
Just watch and see. We will not see 5 hours of snow out of this storm.
I don't mean to take the focus of the message board off of the weather anymore than it already has, but I think that snowman's cavalier attitude (which somehow has the ability to shine through even from a message board) is why nobody likes him. Just a thought. Now back to the weather.
Snowman you are wrong about '93 dude. I remember the time the date and eveything. It started on the evening of March 12th 1993 and continued into March 13th. My parents had to come and get me from the grocery store the night it started and they shut down the grocery store the next day because they didn't have enough help. Get your facts straight dude.
I'm just west of downtown Shelby off of West Sumter near the library, and there has been light rain falling, but the raindrops for the past five minutes have looked real 'fat', to where you can see them clearly, it's trying to flurry a bit I think...
There's DEFINITE SNOW falling in the Challenger 3 area right now. Nice big fluffy flakes too! Temp currently showing 38.5 on my cheap digital thermometer.
For ye with no faith. I haven't backed down from a dusting to an inch. If you check the radar you will see that this is all we probably get due to the heavier bands being south and east of us.
Icy roads tonight and in the morning will be our biggest problem.
cant keep up with snowman....first no snow then an inch then back to no snow then back to an inch...said no snow between 3 and 8....then said just not the whole time...pitiful

I didn't have a Cavalier attitude( and still don't ) until ANONYMOUS users like yourself say things and don't want to get a real ID. I can't help I was right about several; things. You are either going to be right or wrong. It is your perception if I'm cavalier since you have no idea who I am. You just perceive me to be that way because I was right about a few things. No big deal.
Temp dropped from 40 to 37 near polkville, and steady rain with a big sloppy wet snow flake every so often in it. SOOO I see some promise the snow is coming! HOLDING BREATH
Snowing in South East Cherryville. Still mixed with a little rain. Temps still at 40. Pretty excited here the kiddies are looking foward to going out and playing. Been a long time comming. Hope this isn't a big let down??? Come on SNOW!!!

First please read all posts from yesterday. I always stated no more than an inch. As far as no snow between 3 and 8, that was in response to another ANONYMOUS being who said thats when we would get snow.
Not Skips alter ego, he believes in the computer models and I don't. Simple disagreemnet in why he believes what he believes and what I believe.
Snowman go away it did start in the evening i was in Asheville NC and it started that night and all day the next day. So u are not correct on that one.

Wet snow now mixing with the rain in Brittian Village on the south side of Shelby.
ReplyDeleteSnowman go away it did start in the evening i was in Asheville NC and it started that night and all day the next day. So u are not correct on that one.

ReplyDeleteThe dew point at the Shelby airport has dropped to 36 from 39 in the last couple of hours.
ReplyDeleteGood sign. The lower the dew point the faster the air will cool.

ReplyDeleteSnowman you are wrong about '93 dude. I remember the time the date and eveything. It started on the evening of March 12th 1993 and continued into March 13th. My parents had to come and get me from the grocery store the night it started and they shut down the grocery store the next day because they didn't have enough help. Get your facts straight dude.
