Religion run amok

I was surprised that this editorial in Thursday's Star didn't generate more discussion. Any comments?

I grew up in a Christian home and was taught like any other good Southern Pentacostal that alchohol was a terrible sin, maybe the most terrible of all sins. Later on I realized that, not only Pentacostals believe this, but Baptist and many other conservative denominations. In fact, I truly believed I was going to hell when I took my first drink many years ago. After years of this belief I did something that I don't think many Christians do anymore. I actually read the Bible, not once but twice. Since I had felt especially guilty about drinking, every verse I read which had anything to do with drinking, I sought to understand as completely as possible. After all the study, I can find nothing in the Bible which specifically commands Christians not to drink. In fact there are many instances where good, respected people in the Bible drank. The Bible makes it clear that excess of alchohol is a sin just like excess anything can be a sin. According to the Bible, hamburgers can be just as sinful as alchohol if taken in excess. Actually reading the Bible opened my eyes to many truths and this is just one of them. This hypocritical stance on alchohol is just religion, not truth. The Bible is very clear about what is sinful. Murder is sinful, ie abortion. Lying is sinful, adultery is sinful, ect., but nowhere does is say alchohol is sinful. The Bible is full of truth, not religion. The most revealing truth of all was that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. And if any man says he is without sin he is a liar and the truth is not in him. I was not too far gone for the redemption offered by Christ, and if I have a drink or two, that doesn't make one ounce of difference. If I drink until I am staggering and slurred, then I am commiting sin. If I go to the lunch buffet after church on Sunday and eat one plate that's fine. If I, like a lot of Christians I see eat several plates, that's sin. Should we outlaw food?

I noticed all the signs in Grover that said "Wine and strong drink is a mocker. Woe unto the man who is led astray by them". Can they not understand that very simple passage? It says woe unto the man who is led astray by them. I drink, but I'm not led astray by them. I wonder if if these "legalist" use money. Doesn't the Bible the love of money is the root of all evil? I wonder if any of them have eaten more food than they need. Doesn't the Bible say gluttony is a sin?

I think too many people take the bible as the supposed "word of god". It should not be used to refer to anything to do with morality.

We only need to open our eyes to the effects and dangers of an action, and just its merits accordingly.
